Overview

Founded in 1847, this institution is the oldest and largest public research university in Iowa. Its first classes began in 1855 with a cohort of 124 students. Legally known as the State University of Iowa, it has been commonly referred to as The University of Iowa since 1964.

The university is composed of 12 colleges, offering over 200 areas of study and seven professional degrees. Notable for pioneering achievements, it was the first public university in the U.S. to admit men and women equally and the first to accept creative work in the arts alongside academic research. It is also recognized for starting the first law and dental schools west of the Mississippi River and is considered a Public Ivy institution.
