Overview

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a public research university and the oldest public university in the United States, established in 1789. It began instruction in 1795 and was founded through the efforts of William Richardson Davie, who is recognized as the "Father of the University." The university's first building, Old East, remains in use today and is the oldest building originally constructed for a public university.

UNC-Chapel Hill offers a wide range of academic programs and has a history of educational innovations. It was the first university to open a summer school and a normal school linked to a university. The university also established schools of medicine and pharmacy in the late 19th century and developed the first academic honor society, Phi Beta Kappa, in 1904. As the flagship campus of the UNC System, it plays a significant role in higher education in North Carolina. The campus features various cultural and media facilities, including a theatre, radio station, and art museum.
