Overview

Founded in 1970, this New York-based service organization supports the opera community across North America. With nearly 600 member organizations, including prominent opera companies and educational institutions, it fosters the creation, presentation, and enjoyment of opera. Leadership transitions are underway, with President and CEO Marc A. Scorca to be succeeded by Michael J. Bobbitt in January 2026.

The organization advances opera through advocacy for arts policies, national conferences, professional development, and research on industry trends. It has awarded over $24 million in grants for new works and audience engagement, publishes a quarterly magazine, and operates the National Opera Center in Manhattan, which attracts over 80,000 visitors annually and serves as a hub for performances, rehearsals, and resources.
