Overview

New Horizons Regional Education Centers (NHREC) is a prominent educational institution in Virginia, established in 1965. Owned and operated by six Peninsula school divisions, it is the largest of the nine regional centers in the state. NHREC serves approximately 1,500 public school students and 1,200 adult learners annually, offering specialized educational, vocational, technical, and therapeutic services. The institution strives to prepare students to become productive citizens through a comprehensive approach to education.

Located primarily in Hampton, NHREC collaborates with local school systems to address the educational needs of the Peninsula. Its facilities include the Butler Farm Campus, Woodside Lane Campus, and additional wings at Kiln Creek Elementary and York Middle School. NHREC provides various programs, such as vocational training, a Governor’s School for Science and Technology, and specialized centers for autism and emotional disabilities.
