Lynches River Electric Cooperative

Overview

Organized in 1939, this cooperative began providing electricity to rural citizens where electric energy was previously unavailable. In the 1930s, private power companies focused on serving towns and main highways, leaving remote areas underserved. The Rural Electrification Administration, initiated by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, responded to the needs of rural communities. Early members participated by paying a $5 membership fee, granting right-of-way easements, and meeting requirements before power lines were constructed.

The first power lines were energized in late 1939 for approximately 710 original members, covering 175 miles. Today, the cooperative is the leading provider of reliable electric energy and services in its region, serving over 20,000 consumers. It operates as the 13th largest electric co-op in South Carolina, supplying Chesterfield, Kershaw, and Lancaster counties.
