Overview

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research and development center operated by the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration. Located 35 miles northwest of Santa Fe, New Mexico, it was established in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project and has since become a leading institution in national security and nuclear science.

LANL's mission includes maintaining the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear deterrent, advancing nuclear nonproliferation, and tackling various national security challenges. The laboratory conducts extensive research in energy, environment, space, computing, health, and materials sciences, operating over 50 cross-disciplinary facilities and focusing on advanced projects such as nuclear fusion and supercomputing.
