Overview
Mission:
Bringing unheard voices into the public arena, transforming lived experiences into written memoir powerful enough to change hearts, minds, and policy.
Twenty-three years ago, novelist and essayist Erika Duncan gathered a small group of women who had suffered personal or political trauma and guided them in writing their life stories to evoke empathy and compassion. Building on this success, a unique pedagogy for empathy-generating writing was developed, accessible to all regardless of education level. The organization reaches vulnerable and isolated populations in jails, schools, and the wider community, offering facilitated workshops where participants from diverse backgrounds share their stories and foster empowerment, healing, and connectedness. Today, numerous ongoing workshops—spanning English and Spanish—take place primarily on Long Island, with the methodology expanding to other regions and organizations, spreading the power of transformative storytelling.
