Capital Regional District

Overview

The Capital Regional District (CRD) is the regional government for 13 municipalities and three electoral areas on southern Vancouver Island and the nearby Gulf Islands in British Columbia, Canada. Established in 1966, it serves a population of over 377,000 residents and is governed by a 24-member Board of Directors. The CRD focuses on regional decision-making and partnerships with municipalities, electoral areas, First Nations, and multiple stakeholders.

CRD provides a broad range of services including regional planning, emergency management, and infrastructure maintenance for water and sewer systems. It oversees affordable housing through the Capital Region Housing Corporation and manages public safety services. Operating under provincial legislation, CRD derives its revenue primarily from property tax levies and is committed to fostering relationships with First Nations, engaging in sustainability initiatives, and tailoring services to community needs.
