Bank of Uganda

Overview

The Bank of Uganda (BoU) is the central bank of Uganda, established on August 15, 1966, and fully owned by the Government of Uganda. It operates independently and works closely with the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development. The bank is headquartered in Kampala and has nine branches across the country.

BoU's mission is to foster price stability and maintain a sound financial system, with a vision to be a center of excellence in macroeconomic stability. The bank is responsible for monetary policy, implementing a Reserve Money Programme since 1993, and conducting foreign exchange purchases to build reserves. Additionally, it issues Uganda's currency, having released seven different versions since its inception to combat counterfeiting and reflect political changes. The bank is governed by a Board of Directors appointed by the President of Uganda.
